About Bevra Trout Hatchery
Founded in 2019 in Uttarakhand’s Assi Ganga Valley, Bevra Trout Hatchery works to restore both the valley’s unique strain of brown trout and the river ecosystem it calls home. Using the cold, glacier-fed waters of Bevra Gad, our six-raceway hatchery rears healthy, resilient trout for release into the river.
In partnership with the State Fisheries Department and local communities, we promote stewardship, reduce poaching, and create livelihoods that protect both the river and the people who depend on it.
Misson
Restore the Assi Ganga: Rebuild a self-sustaining brown trout population rooted in the valley’s own waters.
Protect the Strain: Safeguard a secure broodstock of the Assi Ganga’s unique brown trout against floods and change.
Partner Locally: Work with valley residents to reduce poaching, promote sustainable angling, and strengthen livelihoods tied to conservation.
Sustain the Future: Blend science, tradition, and stewardship to keep the river—and the culture around it—alive for generations.
Our Story
Brown trout thrived in the Assi Ganga for over a century after their 19th-century introduction, until floods in 2012 nearly erased the valley’s unique strain. Founded seven years later, Bevra Trout Hatchery began as a shared dream to bring them back — a project guided by science, rooted in community, and driven by care for the valley.
Our Team
Our team brings together local expertise and global collaboration. Combining scientific insight, traditional knowledge, and a shared commitment to restoring the Assi Ganga’s brown trout and sustaining the valley’s way of life.
Our Location
Bevra sits beside Bevra Gad, a small glacier-fed tributary of the Assi Ganga in the Uttarkashi district India. This cold, glaicer-fed stream provides the ideal conditions for rearing strong, healthy trout. Just one mile from the village of Agora, the hatchery is deeply connected to both the land and the people who have lived here for centuries.
